The LEXIN dictionaries are the first web-based dictionaries that are made especially for minority language immigrants in Norway. The dictionaries are clearly set out and easy to use, among other things because all information about an entry word is found with the word itself. In addition to information about parts of speech, inflection and pronunciation, the dictionary includes simple explanations and examples of everyday usage, concrete as well as metaphorical.
LEXIN NOW WITH AUDIO (SPEECH SYNTHESIS) FOR BOKMÅL AND NYNORSK
LEXIN now includes audio for all Bokmål and Nynorsk dictionary content. After you have searched for a word in LEXIN, the speaker icon will show after each Bokmål and Nynorsk field. Klikk on the icon to get the text of the field read aloud.
The sound is a so-called 'synthetic' (artificial) voice, also known as 'speech synthesis'. The speech synthesis is delivered by the VoiceASP company. Read more about the speech synthesis on LEXIN's search page (the page that shows after you have chosen a dictionary).
CONDITIONS FOR USE OF LEXIN
Everyone has free access to the LEXIN dictionaries. Commercial use of the dictionaries is strictly prohibited. Use of LEXIN other than for random queries is not allowed; linking to the service is similarly disallowed. Downloading or copying words or any functions from the database of the service is prohibited; as is systematically making word queries accessible from the database.
BILDETEMA — A NEW LANGUAGE RESOURCE FOR SPEAKERS OF MINORITY LANGUAGES
Bildetema is a multilingual interactive dictionary with illustrations, text, audio and animations. It contains about 1800 words, organized into 31 theme pages with 128 sub-themes in all.
Bildetema is related to LEXIN's Picture themes. If you ever used the latter you will recognize many of the same themes.
Bildetema contains Bokmål, Nynorsk, Swedish, Danish and several minority languages. Some of its languages are among LEXIN's, but not all. More languages are under preparation and will gradually be added.
Bildetema builds directly on the Swedish application Bildteman, developed by the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket).

ENGLISH IS NOW ACCESSIBLE AS AN AUXILIARY LANGUAGE
Since the Bokmål-engelsk illustrert ordbok was removed from the LEXIN homepage in 2009 in respect of commercial dictionary publishers, English is now accessible as an auxiliary language (support language) in the entire range of bilingual LEXIN dictionaries.
By searching in e.g. the Bokmål—Tamil dictionary, the hits will appear in both Tamil and English. In many cases where the search word has not been translated into Tamil, there will still be hits in English. The reason for this is that the English LEXIN material has got the same extent as the Norwegian material, and thus is considerably more extensive than the other bilingual dictionaries. Hopefully this will make potential further searches between English and Tamil or other target languages in foreign dictionaries more convenient.
NEW AND IMPROVED SEARCH
We have improved the LEXIN search functionality. The search engine is no longer just looking for entry words (lemmas), but amongst all the words in the dictionary entries. This means that the search may find inflected forms, words in explanations, phrases and examples, etc. The new search is also automatically looking for words containing the search word or the letters one is searching for.
If the new search doesn't find anything, it will look for similiar words, in case the search word may have been misspelled.
Searches in LEXIN will now give a lot more hits than before. The hits may be both good and bad, but the system will strive to display the best hits first.
We hope that everybody will approve the new search. Please contact us if you have questions or comments.
